Flood Response in Bismarck, Minot
Good timing: New kitchen in Bismarck ups sandwich production
BISMARCK and MINOT, N.D. – June 3, 2011 – With floodwaters threatening thousands of North Dakota homes, The Salvation Army is ramping up its relief work in Bismarck, Minot and surrounding communities.
In Bismarck, more than 400 Salvation Army volunteers have spent 1,530 hours since May 25 providing food, water and snacks for about 25,000 people battling the rising waters of the Missouri River. The volunteers are making about 3,000 sandwiches a day and distributing them from four mobile kitchens and a food trailer.
Those sandwich numbers will increase today, when the Bismarck Salvation Army celebrates the grand opening of its new commercial-grade kitchen.
“Talk about good timing,” said Major Lee Morrison, administrator of the Bismarck Salvation Army. “Our new kitchen is allowing us to prepare more food, faster, at the exact time we are needing to boost production for the community.”
In Minot, where about 10,000 people have evacuated their homes due to the swelling Mouse River, The Salvation Army is preparing to offer flood assistance locally and in several nearby cities should disaster strike. Case workers have provided assistance to 20 individuals and households forced to evacuate. Currently, staff and volunteers are serving food and drinks to sandbaggers.
“If it rains heavy today or tomorrow, we could have a serious problem,” said Major Donald Kincaid, administrator of the Minot Salvation Army.
Yesterday, Kincaid received a $5,000 donation from a local woman thankful for all the support The Salvation Army has been providing for flood relief.
