to Fill 4 Million Sandbags by Thursday
Duties include meal prep, food delivery, office work
BISMARCK, N.D. – May 31, 2011 – Volunteers are needed to help The Salvation Army serve thousands of Bismarck residents as they scramble to fill 4 million sandbags by Thursday.
Residents of two neighborhoods have already been asked to evacuate while flood workers continue their fight against the Missouri River, which is expected to reach flood stage in the next two weeks. A total of 8 million sandbags are needed to protect the entire city, officials said.
Salvation Army volunteers are needed now and in the weeks ahead to prepare food, deliver meals to the community and perform light office work. To volunteer, call Tammy at 701-223-1889.
Since May 25, Salvation Army staff and 35 volunteers have provided 15,000 meals, drinks and snacks for residents and officials at sandbag-filling stations and levee sites across the city. Walmart donated several pallets of water.
A Salvation Army disaster team from Fargo, N.D. will be serving until June 15. Additional teams will cycle in every two weeks as needed.
Four Salvation Army mobile kitchens and one food trailer are in service; four of these five units came from other Salvation Army locations in North Dakota and Minnesota.
A contingency dike is scheduled to be built directly in front of the Bismarck Salvation Army, located just east of the Missouri River on Washington Ave.
“We are doing everything we can to help this community,” said Major Lee Morrison, Bismarck Salvation Army administrator. “With the help of volunteers, we will continue to serve for as long as we are needed.”
