PRESS RELEASE

Donations of Cash, Goods Needed
For Minneapolis Tornado Survivors

May 23, 2011  The Salvation Army is providing clothing, food and basic necessities for survivors of the May 22 tornado in North Minneapolis that injured dozens and caused widespread damage.

Staff and volunteers began assisting survivors at 9 a.m. this morning at the North Minneapolis Salvation Army operation center, located at 2024 Lyndale Ave. N.

Survivors in need of assistance are asked to bring identification showing their residency within the storm-damaged area.

While The Salvation Army’s biggest need is monetary contributions, donations of nonperishable food items, hygiene products and diapers are being accepted at the 2024 Lyndale location. Those with a large number of donations should first call 651-746-3400, as storage is limited.

Used clothing and furniture donations are being accepted at The Salvation Army Donation Center, 900 N. 4th St. in Minneapolis or at other Salvation Army thrift stores.

“Tornado survivors will receive free thrift store vouchers at our Lyndale office to spend at any of our stores,” Leedom said. “While we cannot guarantee your donations of clothing and furniture will go exclusively to tornado survivors, our stores present the perfect opportunity serve people in this crisis."

Volunteers aboard three Salvation Army mobile kitchens yesterday served relief workers and storm survivors in Minneapolis, St. Louis Park and Fridley. After serving through the night, The Salvation Army has so far provided food, water and emotional care to more than 800 people.

Monetary donations for metro storm relief may be made online below, by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY or sending a check to The Salvation Army, 2445 Prior Ave, Roseville MN 55113. Make sure to designate your gift “metro storm.” You may also text "BLESSING" to 85944 to make a $10 donation, payable on your cell phone bill.

To receive tornado relief text alerts from The Salvation Army (up to three times per week), text "TORNADO" to 27138 and follow the prompts.

The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 214,000 people a year through its 25 local centers of operation. Daily it serves 2,100 hot meals and shelters 900 people. More than 33,000 local volunteers help The Salvation Army provide these and other services, from child daycare to senior housing. To volunteer, call 651-746-3400.
