Bismarck Salvation Army Receiving Great Plains Food Bank's 100 Millionth Pound of Food
BISMARCK, N.D. – The Great Plains Food Bank will deliver its 100 millionth pound of food to the Bismarck Salvation Army (601 South Washington St.) Thursday, Feb. 17 at 2:30 p.m. A ceremony led by Salvation Army and Great Plains officials will follow.
“We are honored to share this milestone with the Great Plains Food Bank,” said Major Lee Morrison, administrator of the Bismarck Salvation Army. “They are a valued partner whose generosity has allowed us to feed thousands in the Bismarck/Mandan community. A tremendous thank you to Great Plains and the local supermarkets, volunteer groups and churches that help feed hungry families by supporting The Salvation Army.”
Last year the Bismarck Salvation Army food pantry distributed 62.5 tons of food and served more than 9,000 meals to children enrolled in its after-school program. Much of that food came from the Great Plains Food Bank, a program of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota and the state’s largest hunger-relief organization. The Salvation Army and Great Plains have been partners for more than 20 years.
“Reaching this milestone is truly a testament to the generosity and commitment of our many partners,” said Steve Sellent, Great Plains Food Bank program director. “We extend our thanks to the food industry which supplies so much of the product we distribute, the volunteers who assist us in getting the product ready for shipment, our financial supporters who provide the means to collect and distribute the food, and our partner feeding programs like The Salvation Army who are working so diligently on the front lines to get this food into the hands of those who need it most.”
