Tornado Update: Round Two in North Minneapolis
The next round of service for North Minneapolis tornado survivors is underway. After providing $134,000 worth of emergency services – food, clothing, hygiene kits, gift cards, gas vouchers – for nearly 5,000 tornado survivors, The Salvation Army has officially transitioned into long-term care.
“Imagine if your home were destroyed and you had no place to go, no food to eat, no bed to sleep in, no bathroom facilities,” said Major Byron Medlock, Disaster Services Secretary for the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “That’s the nightmare many of these families are living. They need housing immediately.”
The Salvation Army is helping by providing assistance with relocation expenses such as first and last month’s rent, damage deposits, buying new furniture and other costs.
"The families are facing thousands of dollars in unexpected costs that they cannot afford,” Medlock said.
Two Salvation Army case managers have been assigned to provide long-term tornado relief services at The Salvation Army’s North Minneapolis facility, located at 2024 Lyndale Ave.
“The first half of our tornado response is finished,” Medlock said. “The next has just begun.”
Donations with the designation “Metro Storm” can be made to The Salvation Army online HERE or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY (725-2769).
