May 25, 2011 - The Salvation Army is providing clothing, food and basic necessities for survivors of the deadly May 22 tornado in North Minneapolis that killed two, injured dozens and damaged hundreds of homes.

Salvation Army case managers are at a multi-agency disaster recovery center for tornado survivors located at Farview Park in Minneapolis. The case managers are on hand to connect survivors with financial assistance, food and clothing vouchers, gas cards, bus tokens and more. Demand is high; more than 280 households were served yesterday, and officials report more than 1,000 households in line for assistance today.

In addition, two Salvation Army mobile-kitchens and crews are serving food and drinks from 7am to 7pm to survivors and relief workers. In the three days since the disaster, The Salvation Army has provided food, water, clothing, emotional care and other services to an estimated 2,000 people.

$1 Million Needed
While donations of hard goods are not requested, The Salvation Army is in great need of monetary donations. Money is needed to provide survivors with immediate needs like gas cards, food vouchers and other necessities. In addition, The Salvation Army will need at least $1 million to meet the long-term housing needs of the estimated 400 survivors whose homes were severely damaged or destroyed.
